Deer Season in Texas and Several Mysteries

Buck Fever cover image

Deer season has started in the Texas Hill Country and Blanco County Game Warden John Marlin has his hands full dealing with all of the high-roller trophy hunters in from the big cities as well as the usual local mix of good old boys and poachers. When Marlin gets a call about a man shot while wearing a deer suit plus a wounded buck acting nuts, things get really strange, even for Texas.

This first book in the Blanco County Mystery series has got it all: a strong, intelligent main character in John Marlin, a well-rounded cast of supporting characters that range from quirky to shady, and plenty of humor to go along with the very good mystery.

There is actually more than one mystery to be solved. There’s double-dealing, a bit of blackmail, and of course, murder. There are lots of clues and action to keep the reader jumping from one to the other. And there are lots of animals involved.

Two of the supporting characters need an honorable mention as they are also the main providers of the humor in the book. Red O’Brien and Billy Don Craddock are a couple of Hill Country good old boys who wouldn’t be out of place on Hee Haw, and they seem be drawn to every questionable deal or scam in the county. Could two grown men really be this stupid and gullible? Luckily for the reader, the answer is yes.

Enjoy the mysteries, the humor, and the critters.
