An Inside Look at Dog Rescue Work

Rescue Road
cover image

This book is a must-read for animal lovers, owners of rescue dogs, and anyone considering adopting a rescue dog.

The number of dedicated people across the country who devote time, effort, and money to saving the lives of thousands of dogs that would otherwise be put to death in shelters who are described in this book are true heroes. Not only do they save the lives of these dogs, they help match them to new forever homes and temporary foster homes where they can be nursed back to health in order for them to eventually make it to their forever home. The amount of work involved in this is astounding from maintaining websites, vetting applications for prospective new owners, to going out and finding and choosing which dogs are considered to be adoptable and knowing that they can’t save them all. The descriptions of the conditions of many of these shelters and neighborhoods are often appalling, and it is heartbreaking to read of the many dogs that cannot be saved.

The author traveled along the long and unglamorous road that many of these dogs take from being rescued from shelters and streets in southern states to the eventual road trip to the mid-Atlantic states and beyond to their new families. The determination of the volunteer workers and the driver of the truck for “Rescue Road Trips” keep the flow of rescues going despite the foul weather, the apathy and sometimes hostility of public officials, and the tight budgets all for the big payoffs of “Gotcha Days” when the dogs are united with their adopting families.

There is a list of organizations at the end of the book with contact information for those readers who would like to help these volunteers with their efforts to save more dogs and to help keep the “Rescue Road Trips” on the road.

Recommended.
