Heart’s Desire Sampler

by Nyssa

Heart's Desire Sampler image

This sampler was designed for my needlework company At River’s End 20 years ago. Samplers never really go out of style, so why not make one for your special Valentine?

The design uses two specialty stitches, Smyrna Crosses and Kloster blocks along with the usual cross stitches and backstitch.

There’s no cutting of the fabric around the Kloster blocks as in traditional Hardanger work, so don’t be intimidated, just enjoy the effect of the groups of Klosters.

If you’re unfamiliar with Smyrnas or Klosters, don’t worry. The chart has diagrams included that will show you how to make the stitches. You might want to practice them on a piece of scrap evenweave before working them into the sampler. If you’re an old hand, the sampler will work up quickly.

If you have trouble finding the Needle Necessities overdyed floss called for in the materials list, Caron Waterlilies Flame, Sampler Threads Buckeye Scarlet, Anchor red varigated floss (1204), or as a last resort plain Anchor floss in solid red (3046) could be substituted.

Make the completed sampler even more unique by using a heart charm or even a small heart button as an alternative to the Mill Hill Treasures Heart. Don’t be afraid to depart from the specific fibers or embellishments called for in the pattern.

To get started, click Heart’s Desire Chart to download and save the chart. Print it out full-sized in landscape mode and start gathering your fabric and fibers!
